New Build Apartment House
The site for this development was a disused clubhouse building on Ashley Road, St Albans and is located adjacent to residential gardens in an area of mixed Victorian terraced /1930s semi-detached housing. The form of the building was achieved after a protracted planning process and the flat roof and cutaways of the corners together with the change of material to the upper floor from brick to mineral plank cladding were used to minimise the apparent massing. The apartment house accommodates four 2 bedroom flats and two studio flats with entrance and stair access from a communal parking area. The provision of windows on the rear elevation was limited by potential overlooking of adjacent houses so the oriel windows were devised to give daylight to bedrooms whilst directing views out with louvred privacy screens. The elevation towards Ashley Road was not restricted and has been provided with large areas of glazing and balconies. The ground floor flats have private courtyards and tiered brick planters which also retain the change of level across the site. Stepped access leads to two further parking spaces that are dedicated to these flats. The chevron form of the oriel windows has been echoed in the glazed entrance canopy and the splayed infills to the metal stair balustrades and external railings.
